HE-BP High Energy Blast Panel
The HE-BP High Energy Blast Panel is specifically designed for electrical arc-fault building overpressure events, such as those that occur in substations or switchgear rooms.
When an electrical fault or gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) discharge happens, a sudden and intense explosion pressure can develop inside the building. The HE-BP panel rapidly relieves this excess pressure, providing explosion protection and safeguarding both structural integrity and personnel safety.
Applications:
- Electrical substations
- Switchgear rooms
- Power distribution facilities
- GIS installations
- Industrial buildings in coastal or corrosive environments
- And more
High performance for demanding conditions
Engineered to handle high-energy over pressurisations, the HE-BP can suppress pressure rise within 60 milliseconds, ensuring fast and reliable arc blast and arc flash protection. This lightweight, high-performance explosion vent conforms to the NFPA 65 guidance on explosive atmospheres and can be used as a standalone unit or combined with the SHX-UN Universal Pressure Vent range when a fire-rated system is required.
The HE-BP is an upgraded version of AFP’s Dynamic Weather Panel (DWP), offering enhanced strength and resilience for demanding environments.
Corrosion-resistant construction
Manufactured entirely from 316L stainless steel, the HE-BP High Energy Blast Panel delivers exceptional corrosion resistance, making it ideal for coastal installations, chemical plants, and other aggressive environments.
Its robust construction ensures long-term durability even when exposed to salt air, humidity, or other corrosive agents.
Adjustable magnetic lock system
Each HE-BP panel features an adjustable magnetic locking mechanism designed to keep the door securely closed under high wind conditions.
The opening pressure can be factory-set or adjusted on-site between 200 and 500+ Pascals.
There are two ways to adjust the opening pressure:
- Add or remove magnets
- Change the magnet spacer thickness

Short magnet flux design
The lock system uses Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-bonded magnets combined with 316L stainless steel spacers.
This short flux design enables high opening pressure settings while maintaining minimal additional peak pressure, typically only 50 Pascals above magnet hold.
For example, if the panel opens at 350 Pascals, the measured peak pressure will be around 400 Pascals, assuming correct Free Vent Area (FVA) application for dust explosion scenarios.

Weather and smoke seal
The HE-BP is built as a single-door unit with a PTFE-coated foam perimeter seal, providing complete weatherproofing and smoke ingress protection. This ensures reliable operation even in outdoor or high-moisture environments.

Blast door anchoring
Each panel includes integrated door supports with side wall fixing points for secure anchoring. This design serves two key functions:
- Prevents the door from over-rotating during a blast and explosion vent event
- Provides additional mechanical strength, securing the door firmly to the building structure

Why testing matters
Testing is critical for the HE-BP High Energy Blast Panel. It validates that the panel can safely relieve explosion pressure and maintain its structural stability during arc flash and arc blast events.
Testing ensures the HE-BP will perform as expected in real-world electrical environments, giving engineers and facility operators confidence in its explosion protection solutions for chemical plants, substations, switchgear rooms, and other high-risk installations.

Add-ons
SHX-UN
The HE-BP can be combined with the SHX-UN, a universal pressure vent designed for inert gas systems, when a 4-hour fire rating is required. This add-on ensures the panel continues to relieve overpressure safely while supporting explosion suppression and meeting fire safety regulations.
Grilles
The AFP product range offers several security grilles to mount on vents in outside walls for different levels of protection.
