ArcX DB | External Blast Door

The ArcX DB is an advanced external blast door. It is a multipurpose unit. Designed as both a pressure relief vent to vent overpressure from inside a building and also providing an outstanding level of blast protection up to 100 kPa.

With its innovative design and robust construction, the ArcX DB ensures the safety and integrity of critical infrastructure, especially in buildings housing electrical equipment or gas suppression systems.

Robust construction and lightweight design

The ArcX DB features a lightweight 1.5 mm steel door, which contributes to both its strength and ease of installation. The door is engineered to withstand significant blast pressures while keeping the overall weight manageable. This makes it particularly suitable for installations in gas suppression systems and buildings requiring protection from arc faults.

The external blast door is constructed from 316L stainless steel, ensuring durability and resistance to harsh environments. It also incorporates a 304 stainless steel pressure grille and a powder-coated steel wall liner, providing added resilience and efficiency.

Superior protection

To further enhance its performance, the ArcX DB is equipped with a perimeter seal, ensuring a complete barrier against dust, weather, smoke and external blasts. It has been designed with a flush mount, protruding only 12mm from the external wall to minimize exposure to sideways blast loads.

Proven performance

The ArcX DB doors, in two sizes—ArcX DB 1000 and ArcX DB 700—were tested in a high-pressure test environment. The test involved the use of a 150 mm air cannon, charged to 2.5 bar, to simulate a real world blast effect of a blast wave. This was fired into a 2.7m³ high-pressure test cell. The test was conducted to verify the performance of the doors in both relieving internal pressures and withstanding external blast events.

Both ArcX DB blast doors passed the performed blast test successfully with a pressure peak exceeding 80 kPa or 0.8 bar and without noticeable permanent deformations, cracks or damage. The smaller ArcX DB 700 unit also successfully passed the test with a blast wave pressure peak exceeding 100 kPa or 1.0 bar.

It is expected that ArcX DB units with smaller outer dimensions then those under test, will also provide equal or improved blast protection.

Certifications & testing

  • 4-hour fire resistance when used with an SHX-UN pressure relief vent.
  • Blast and Explosion tested with AFP's blast simulator (see data sheet).
  • Blast test witnessed by DNV.
  • IP 54 Cat 2 Certified by CSA Group

Types of gases

The ArcX DB Blast Door can be used with gaseous fire suppression systems using nitrogen based inert gas. Inert gases are non-reactive and leave no residue, making them ideal for protecting sensitive equipment and critical spaces. Nitrogen based inert gaseous agents include:

  • Nitrogen (N₂)
  • Inergen® (Blend of N₂, Ar, and CO₂): IG-55, IG-100, IG-541
  • Argonite® (Blend of N₂ and Ar)

Benefits of Certification

The extensive testing and certifications for the ArcX DB provide assurance of its reliability and performance in extreme conditions. These tests ensure that the door will reliably perform during blast events, protecting personnel and sensitive equipment from structural damage. The 4-hour fire rating of the SHX-UN when used in combination with the ArcX DB acts as an effective fire barrier when installed in a building’s external walls, providing additional peace of mind in high-risk environments.

By meeting these rigorous standards, the ArcX DB guarantees that it will function as designed, preventing dangerous over-pressurization, avoiding structural damage, and ensuring the safe operation of the building in the event of an explosion or fire. This level of certification underscores the ArcX DB's role as a critical safety component in protecting your facility.
